When Is the Best Time to Schedule Air Conditioner Maintenance?
Summer is right around the corner here in Columbia City, Indiana. While you’ve probably been itching for some warmer weather, you need to make sure you’re prepared for it. That means more than stocking up on summer snacks and sunscreen; it also means making sure your air conditioner can handle the upcoming hot temperatures.
When was the last time you had air conditioning maintenance done? If you can’t quite recall, the home service heroes at Redman Services are here to remind you about scheduling your air conditioner maintenance just in time for summer.
How Often Do I Need to Have Air Conditioner Maintenance Performed?
If it’s been over a year since you’ve had air conditioning maintenance performed, then it’s time to have it done again. Your air conditioner should be serviced every year. The best time for AC maintenance is in the spring. You want to have your air conditioner serviced in the spring so it’s ready for the summer months ahead. If you’re unsure when your last service appointment was, you can check on your furnace. Usually your heating and air conditioning technician will write on a ledger that’s on your unit when it was last serviced.
While you might wait for spring to be in full swing before you call for an appointment, we encourage you to make an appointment sooner rather than later. This is because our HVAC maintenance schedule fills up fast. The sooner you call to schedule maintenance, the sooner we can get you on our schedule.
HVAC Spring Maintenance Checklist
While you’re thinking about your air conditioning system, here are a few things you can do to help maintain your unit until your next AC maintenance appointment.
Test Your Air Conditioner
Even if you haven’t turned your cooling system on for relief yet, it’s not a bad idea to give it a quick test now to make sure it’s working. Turn on your air conditioner and make sure that cold air is coming out of your vents. If it’s not, or you notice something weird is happening, be sure to let your heating and cooling system technician know.
Change Your Air Filter
Air filters should be changed every 90 days, or three months on average. Your air filter protects your HVAC system from the dust and debris that circulate in your air ducts from accumulating inside your air conditioner or furnace. Find your air filter, and replace it with a new filter that’s the same size. You can buy most air filters at your local hardware store.
Clear the Area Around Your Outside Unit
While the weather is warmer, you’re probably starting to do some outdoor chores again. Make sure that your outdoor AC unit isn’t clogged up with grass, plants, or other weeds. You always want to mow carefully around your air conditioner, and make sure the clippings do not fly into the unit’s fins. You want to have 2 feet clear around all sides of the unit, so cut back any plants or move anything that’s leaning against the house or outdoor unit. Your air conditioner works best when plants don’t restrict the airflow.
Open Your Vents
While you might think that closing vents in unused rooms will save money on your heating and cooling bills, it actually can strain your AC system. Go around your home and make sure all your vents are open to ensure proper ventilation and air circulation. Then, clean your vents if they are dusty.
